Has there ever been something in your life that you want extremely bad, but you know you will probably never be able to get it? Maybe a lake house, a motorcycle or a car. Most everyone has something like that in their life. You may work your absolute hardest to achieve what you want, but you just can’t seem to be able to get it. Well I have to imagine that is the situation the people who made this crazy creation were in. Instead of just always wishing for what they couldn’t have, they took an alternative route and made something incredible. This thing is like nothing you’ve ever seen before.

There's no easier way to save a few bucks than by buying dry. Beans and barley can be turned into a week's worth of chicken chili, salad or mushroom risotto with this important, and free, ingredient — water.

White Bean Chili

INGREDIENTS:
2 tablespoons oil
1 onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon cumin
4 cups chicken stock
1 pound dried white beans, soaked overnight
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1/2 butternut squash, peeled and cubed
1 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs
Salt to taste

STEPS:
1.) In a large pot, heat oil. Add onion and garlic and saute until soft.
2.) Stir in cumin, stock, and water.
3.) Add beans and simmer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
4.) In the last 1/2 hour of cooking, stir in squash and chicken.

Barley Risotto

INGREDIENTS:
1/4 cup butter
3 cups chicken stock
1/2 onion, diced
5 ounces baby bella mushrooms, sliced
2 cloves garlic, smashed
2 sage leaves, chopped
1/2 cup barley

STEPS:
1.) Heat butter in a sauce pot. In a separate sauce pot, heat the chicken stock.
2.) To the pot with the butter, add onion, mushrooms, and garlic, and cook until soft.
3.) Stir in sage and barley.
4.) Add one cup of stock and simmer until liquid is absorbed.
5.) Continue adding stock 1/4 cup at a time, allowing each amount of liquid to absorb before adding more.
6.) Continue until all the stock is used and barley is done cooking, about 35 minutes.

Barley Salad

INGREDIENTS:
1/2 butternut squash, cut into small cubes
1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon olive oil, divided
3/4 pound barley
1 lemon
2 teaspoons cumin
2 shallots, minced
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1/4 bunch of parsley, chopped

STEPS:
1.) Heat oven to 400 degrees.
2.) Toss butternut squash with 1 tablespoon oil and spread on a baking sheet.
3.) Bake for 20 minutes until soft.
4.) Cook barley in salted, boiling water for 25 minutes. Drain well and pour into a large bowl.
5.) Whisk together 1/4 cup olive oil, lemon and cumin.
6.) Toss with roasted squash, shallots and barley.
7.) Garnish with parsley.

With sugar, cinnamon and other spices, we're putting a sweet twist on a classic American comfort food.

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup heavy cream
1 1/2 cups whole milk
4 cloves, whole
1 pinch nutmeg
2 teaspoons cinnamon, plus more for sprinkling
3 tablespoons sugar, plus more for sprinkling
1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 box pasta, shape of your choice
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup unsalted butter
1 pinch kosher salt
1 (8 ounces) container mascarpone
To serve:
Berry compote
Whipped cream
Vanilla ice cream

STEPS:
1.) Preheat oven to 375°F.
2.) Combine cream, milk, spices, sugar, and vanilla in a small saucepan, and heat on low to infuse flavors, about 10 minutes.
3.) Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Cook pasta for 2 minutes less than recommended cooking time. Strain, and run cold water through it to stop cooking.
4.) In a medium saucepan, combine butter and flour and cook to create a roux. Once roux comes together, keep cooking until butter starts to brown and is fragrant.
5.) When roux is done, add milk mixture in batches through a strainer while whisking. Continue adding, cooking and whisking until your sauce won't thicken anymore.
6.) Turn heat off and stir in mascarpone. Add pasta and stir to combine.
7.) Transfer mixture to a 9x13 baking dish, sprinkle top liberally with cinnamon and sugar and bake* for 15-20 minutes, until bubbling.
8.) Serve with fresh berry compote, whipped cream and/or vanilla ice cream.

*Note: Mac and cheese can be kept for up to 3 days in the fridge before baking.

English phrases to talk about Tradespeople - Free English lesson

A "tradesperson" is the one who is skilled in a field that requires both manual labor and expertise (detailed knowledge about how to do something).
In this lesson Niharika explains some skilled trades.

A mechanic is someone who fixes machines. When someone talks about "a mechanic", they
usually mean an auto mechanic.

An electrician fixes the electrical systems in a building.

A mason (or bricklayer) is someone who makes things out of bricks or stone.

A plumber fixes water pipes and drainage for a building.

A welder connects pieces of metal using a torch, which heats the metal to high temperatures.

A locksmith fixes locks or opens locks when the keys have been lost.

A landscaper cares for lawns and gardens for people's homes or businesses.

A roofer installs or fixes roofs: installing shingles, fixing leaks, etc.

A carpenter builds things out of wood.

A repairman fixes things, ranging from electronics to shoes.
